Lloyd about: homeowner I like Sherwin Williams, Harmony and Duration Home and have had no complaints. You should be able to go to the store with your business card and get a 20% discount for being a designer.
Lloyd about: homeowner Ask Brad about daily attire. Shirt and tie every day. That is why it is nice to be your own boss. Growing the hair out, wearing shorts in the "office" and sometimes to meetings. It is great.
Lloyd about: homeowner I am definitely a home depot man. Home Depot, or at least the three right by me are good for the actual building supplies and tool rentals. If you want the pretty shit, you go to Lowes.
But I hate going to Lowes around here because I am typically in my dirty work clothes and there are women that are dressed to impress and they stare at me like I am some sort of monkey (I may or may not smell like one). Plus I don't think our Lowes has as good of a selection.
Lloyd about: homeowner Ahhh, I remember those days of Home Depot trips. Oh wait, they still happen. However now I can leave the store with a receipt that is less than $100.
Actually it may be cool to do a blog that pictures the receipt and then a picture of the completed project from what was purchased.
Lloyd about: Manliest Cities!? Well then we have one hell of a manly female population.
Lloyd about: Manliest Cities!? Really?! Columbus? Well I can tell you that number is flawed big time, because I can not tell you how many little girls (Allison being one of them) that drive big ass trucks. I would say almost 25% of those pickup trucks are owned by females.
Lloyd about: ipod Wes, you are way ahead of me. I don't even have an ipod. Hell, we still have basic cable. :(
Lloyd about: this weekend. I have a booth pimping out my new business this weekend. And looking forward to some sleep since I have been up late for the past couple of weeks working on marketing material.
Lloyd about: good news this time Congrats biggie!!
Lloyd about: work Yeah Biggie, how did it go, and who was your interview with?
Lloyd about: side job Berg, what we did at my old office that what I liked is we charged about $2,000 for schematic design. Then from there we looked at how long we thought it would take to finish the necessary drawings and determined our fee from there.
But a 5% fee that includes site visits is pretty low. You may want to give them your fee to produce the drawings, and then an hourly rate for site visits and any "office" work. And maybe add a "Not To Exceed" number.
Lloyd about: lawn care I don't bag my grass clipping either, I just using the mulching attachment. Plus I typically keep my grass at a 3" height because I don't water my lawn. So it allows it to stay green a little longer in late July & August. I also have a compost bin which is mostly my yard trimmings, leaves and kitchen scraps. I utilize the lazy man method of composting of just throwing everything into the bin made of used wooden pallets. So after a year you should have usable compost. So we should have some good stuff for our garden this year.
One thing I would recommend is throwing down some corn gluten within the next couple of weeks. It will help to stop any weeds or crab grass from growing. And it is a more natural way than the chemical fertilizers.
Lloyd about: Columbus Concert Ok, so really, who would like to go to the Blue October/Hurricane Bells concert on April 17th at the LC? I talked to my friend today and he is going to put me on his list to get into the show for free, and I can bring at least 6 other people.
Lloyd about: Columbus Concert Anyone in Columbus want to go see the Blue October concert on April 17th. My old high school friends band, Hurricane Bells is opening the show. Hurricane Bells Concert
Lloyd about: ecofont Pretty cool Abby. Nice find.
Lloyd about: Rock Band 2 Yeah, Steve the lead singer is an old high school friend. His time has been devoted to Hurricane Bells recently. And that band actually just had a feature hit as the opening song to the most recent release of Twilight.
Lloyd about: Rock Band 2 So who here has Rock Band 2? I just found out an old high school friend has his band featured. The band is Longwave.
Lloyd about: Friday That f'n bitch did it to me again! She changed my diaper outside and now my balls are frozen.
Lloyd about: Wegmans IS awesome It use to be #1. But is has been in the top 10 for a long time. And has always been on top for it's industry.
Lloyd about: Wegmans IS awesome Oh Wegmans, how I miss thee. Let me count the ways….No more cleaning products on top of my bread, no more dumb fucking employees who don’t know where shit is in the same isle they are stocking, stocked isles, correctly labeled items and permanent locations for their products. I can’t stand going into the Giant Eagle. It drives me fucking nuts. Yeah they just remodeled the store, but it is just putting lipstick on a pig. Now I am biased, the majority of my family has worked for Wegmans. Including my parents who still do. Hell I even called the development department back in the fall to see if they had any openings when shit was real scary with both my job and Amy’s. I even had an interview set up for right after Thanksgiving.
Anyways, Wegmans prides themselves on customer service a quality products. No one comes close to that here in Ohio. Well maybe Wholefoods, but I can’t afford to do all my shopping there. I mean seriously, who has a good experience in the stores around here. Amy has a discussion with the store manager almost on a weekly basis because of some sort of screw up.
Anyways Cathryn, you won’t have to wait too long to shop at Wegmans again. They have plans for I believe 4 stores in the Boston area. An old family friend just moved up there to start recruiting employees for when the first store opens. Also when I had my phone interview I talked with one of my interviewer who I worked with a couple of summers and he told me they put a pub in the store to get around the issue of not being able to sell beer in those stores. But he said it has been very successful and they are planning more. So Wes and Leanne, soon you guys may be able to stop and have a beer and then go grocery shopping.
Lloyd about: ACAD Help Can any of you pro me with some assistance. I need to recover an ACAD 2000 file. Can anyone do that for me?
Thanks!
Lloyd about: Flas your bra He is an interesting post about a woman who flashed the Google street car. flashyour bra
Lloyd about: Cam Congrats guys!
Lloyd about: ok go That video is pretty cool. I actually found it last week and watched it about 10 times with the kids because they liked it as well.
Lloyd about: lost boys Great movie!!
Lloyd about: Free Green - Not so Empty House I also have my own submission in the other category if would like to extend the same courtesy. You can vote for each entry once per email address. Salt Shed
Lloyd about: Free Green - Starter House I don't now how many of you know this, but Brad & I entered the Free Green - Who's Next green home design competition. 50% of the judging is from public voting. We would appreciate your support by providing any comments and voting for our submission. Connect House
Lloyd about: o.m.g. Berg, congrats on the job. Just think of it as a way to improve your selling skills when getting back to architecture. I remember a few in my class at Kent that we always referred to as used cars salesmen by the way they presented their projects.
Lloyd about: o.m.g. Thanks biggie. I have been way to busy to follow up on any news lately.
Lloyd about: o.m.g. Ok, I have to ask, who is this boner person everyone keeps talking about? I need to know.
And I think Brad may be appreciating this snow right now because it may keep me in Cleveland one more night and it will give me more time to work with no distractions. Also Ben's birthday is in two weeks, and the day he was born, is when Columbus had it's record breaking snow fall.
Lloyd about: labor Yeah, sex is a big one on the list to start labor. The chemicals in the swimmers are similar/same as what they actually use to induce labor.
Lloyd about: olympic I was wondering the same thing Brad. They did cross the finish line, so that time should count for something.
Lloyd about: olympic Me too biggie. I was shocked to see his scores so low compared to some of the other runs.
Lloyd about: olympic Derek, actually it was one of his sponsors that built the half pipe for him. However it is still cool to have your own halfpipe in the mountains.
Lloyd about: olympic What about the snowboard that is from Columbus (Vito). Where the hell does he practice to qualify for the Olympics?
But Shaun was crazy. He easily got 6' higher than anyone else.
Lloyd about: 10 Reasons Not To Become An Architect As Andy mentioned, there are a lot of aspects of our profession that just about suck. And for me to run my own show is a lot about freedom to do what I want and control my own destiny. Working for yourself you don't have to bring in as much money to survive.
As Brad can attest to. I got very frustrated with watching my bosses be in the office all day instead of pounding the pavement to try and get work in the office. And any small residential job that I would have brought into the office wouldn't even pay the months rent and utilities. Where doing those smaller jobs on my own actually means something to my pocket book more.
However I think the architecture firm has to go outside the box a little when it comes to marketing, and even the services they are providing. For instance I am going to be in Cleveland all next week for training to become an Energy Rater. That is providing me with two opportunities. One a separate income stream that is not dependent on traditional architectural fees, but is also providing additional marketing opportunities for the architectural services because it will get me in front of A LOT more people who are even considering renovations and additions. That being said, if I had to do it over again, I may have gone into construction. I just enjoy what our industry does to much.
Lloyd about: 10 Reasons Not To Become An Architect Well I am in the process of starting my own company. Granted until I actually get my licenses, I am limited to residential work. But that is only going to be a portion of my business.
Lloyd about: 10 Reasons Not To Become An Architect Food for thoug
Lloyd about: No, it is very possible. There is even a chance that we saw you on the hill and tried to chase you down.
As for obnoxious, I am sure you rolled your eyes. My one friend was known for yelling something about slipping tongue.
Lloyd about: HELLO Our ski club was Thursday nights. And Rattler was the one we always raced down. And I believe it was Clark that had the moguls most of the time. A few times on rattler.
So did you not ski under the lifts because of the immature guys yelling down from the lifts to the ladies :), or was it because of retards that thought it would be cool to get off the lifts a little early and jump down :)
Lloyd about: HELLO I tried moguls a bunch of times. Was never very successful because where I skied, (Swain) they did not have them very often. My friends and I were all about speed and jumps. Going down the black diamonds in a tuck position. I was successful enough to pull off a few 360's while pissing off the snowboarders because we invaded their half pipe.
Lloyd about: For the archi dorks Speaking of blogs, here is one for the archi dorks.
Lloyd about: site update Very cool bub. Next you will have to figure out a gadget that incorporates facebook updates onto BDC like the twitter gadget you see on so many blogs and websites now a days.
Lloyd about: trains To Aaron point about daily or weekly commuters. I wouldn't be surprised if you see a lot of them because it would make it easier for some people to increase their job search radius if they could just hop on the train for their long commute.
Lloyd about: trains The attached article says estimated ticket prices would be about $18 for a one way trip to Cleveland from CBUS. It also states that their are 6 Million people that live directly on the proposed route.
And I will definitely use the train. Especially if I can just hop on in CBUS and transport my family to Rochester. Just the ability to let the kids get up and walk around and use the bathroom when they want will make traveling so much nicer.
Lloyd about: archi stuff Biggie, here is a new one. It is actually based here in Columbus and I have been asked to start writing some articles for their Go Green Channel.
Lloyd about: holidays Brad and I are in the office until Wednesday.
Lloyd about: economy We are seeing a lot of work out there, we just aren't getting any of it. Well at least none that can sustain us for any length of time.
Lloyd about: birthdays Hey, just because you are the oldest, doesn't make you the most mature. Happy Birthday!
Lloyd about: Fonts Here is a font that someone should use for their next proposal.
Lloyd about: Feed the Englishes Amy follows this blog "I am an organizing junkie" that a shit of people post what they are going to eat for the week w/ recipes. And there is some other blog that a woman did about cooking in her crockpot everyday for a year. We had something good from the crockpot menu this evening. I am an organizing junkie
Lloyd about: New Event Sorry yall, Ben will win an eating contest any day of the week. The kid never stops eating.
Lloyd about: lots o The kids grow way to fast. Ben is now starting to talk. It is fun to listen to him spout the girls names in his class "Ab..by". And Kaelynn turns 4 in less than two weeks. So big birthday party coming this weekend with a lot of her friends.
As for the picture emails, YES I was slacking this summer, but we have started using shutterfly and created a share site because Kodak charges for theirs. So no more emails going out. I will just post the updates to facebook. So you will have to have Leanne let you know when new ones are up. Which actually new ones got posted last night. The Lloyd's life in pictures
Lloyd about: Most awesome video ever!! That is awesome, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Lloyd about: For you new planners in the group Sorry Bub!
Lloyd about: For you new planners in the group Oh more specifically to your point Berg. Who gives a shit if there is a LEED AP in a firms office. It is only one point. Plus if any of your consultants has a LEED AP you are all set. You don't have to have project experience to work on a LEED project, you just need project experience if you want to sit for the LEED AP+ exam.
Lloyd about: For you new planners in the group No Bub, it was specifically for Derek and Abby.
And Berg, I agree with the new experience requirement for LEED AP. What I don't like is how they are handling CE credits. There are very few providers and for every day we don't decide to opt in, is another day we miss to obtain those credits before the two year grace period is up. It is becoming a cash cow for the USGBC.
On another note the registration fees for projects are doubling and the registration fees are increasing as well the first of the year. A
Lloyd about: nice. I would call that indecent exposure. It is not decent to expose us to that.
Lloyd about: um There is a man like that at the church Amy & I got married in. My biggest question, is the girlfriend on the fence if she like guys or girls? I guess this way she has the best of both worlds and really doesn't have to decide. I will keep the crude comment to myself.
Lloyd about: exams ugh, 5 weeks?
Lloyd about: Happy Birthday Luckily no one in my household has gotten it. Could be because we are all drugged up.
Lloyd about: Energy usage Now this may only really interest myself and Bing, but I found a cool online energy tracker that you just go in and enter all of your utility bills. it spits out tons of information and will also allow you to track your projects that would affect your energy usage. Brad and I were playing with it a little. You can sign up for a free account here. www.mygreenquest.com/symhome/ Or check out my share page Lloyd home energy usage

Lloyd about: Columbus Sorry, not much here either. Just exploring the interweb. I will hopefully post some pictures of the home remodel over the weekend though. Almost done, however is sucks that funds have been cut to finish it :p
Lloyd about: ARE Transition Yeah, I just got off the phone with them. They are not mailing anything out. It is that prometric f'd things up so I have to call them to get it fixed.
Lloyd about: ARE Transition Well my candidate ID number is not recognized by Prometric, so I have a call into Tina Hawkins at NCARB.
Lloyd about: ARE Transition For those of you who are transition candidates for the ARE, have any of you received anything from NCARB stating they have transferred you over to the new system? Or are we just allowed to start taking the new exams? Because I have 4 more to go and I want to register before October 1st when the test fees go up $40.
Lloyd about: awesome I blame Abby for the entire conversation. If she did not mention brushing her teeth, the whole putting it in your mouth scenario would not have happened. Now other orifices is another story. I mean come on, draw attention to one part of the body and that's what the mind takes down into the gutter.
Lloyd about: ridiculous That is awesome. I love it when PAC Man got whacked with the golf club.
Lloyd about: awesome Exactly, why brush your teeth twice?
Lloyd about: awesome Abby, do you really want me to comment? Well I am sure Berg will chime in.
Lloyd about: Got Twins? Congrats Thews!!! Word of advise, get any misc house project done before the second shows up.
Lloyd about: Time kill I found a new time kill game similar to demolition city. Crush the Castle
Lloyd about: bored Tourettes' there Wes?
Lloyd about: footballs: me They learn to run so well because the defense could never protect them behind the line.
Lloyd about: HOUSES How the fuck does that work? Their was an article written a few months back in one of the community paper by a realtor stating how they can help make any home a LEED home and help with construction. Well I wrote a letter to the editor basically chewing them out for publishing that because they have no qualifications and their data was wrong. Needless to say there has not been an article from this realtor since then. Oh, did I say the article was actually from the CEO of HER. But I agree with Becky. All this money for now work. 7% for one person to sell a building. We are lucky to 6% to design and have to share it with multiple people.
Lloyd about: houses Our real estate agent gave us a couple of referrals. So we obviously chose between the couple that we were given. Plus inspectors have a loose code of ethics to disclose information as we do as architects. However like all professions, you have your good guys and the hack jobs.
Lloyd about: one more reason to hate the dolphins my ears are bleeding from listening to that.
Lloyd about: Disturbing He left out the part of the story where the guys 10 year old son was in the seat next to him.
Lloyd about: Pantuso Twins! Oh they learn fast. Over the weekend we were at one of Kaelynns friends house. Well she came outside and said and I quote "Daddy, Will has one of those to, like you and Benny!" While pointing at my crotch.
Again congrats Becky!
Lloyd about: iphones My brother has that app and his girlfriend used it at the table last time we were all home faking an upset stomach because of the food my mom made. It was hilarious because most of us at the table had no idea.
Lloyd about: ugh Berg, now you have to have worked on at least one LEED project to qualify to take the LEED AP+ exam. So that would be LEED for Homes, NC, CI and all the other versions.
However you can take the LEED Associate exam. Which from my understanding is the first half of the exam that is just general knowledge about LEED. Then once you get experience on a LEED project, you can take the second half of the exam. As for study material. The best material are the study guides. And like everyone has already stated, the old stuff is not going to get you very far. There have been some significant changes in the new rating system. Which will translate into the new exam.
Lloyd about: Time kill So when you are bored, just do some demo Demolition City
Lloyd about: in case you are bored at work... Andy, why is it that I see you listening to this at work and just giggling through out the entire thing.
Lloyd about: Go away already!!! Buffalo sure does like it's cereals.
Lloyd about: happy weekend everybody Pretty good. Another good year of fireworks on the lake with no miss fires.
Lloyd about: residential architects Drip over I&W is what the manufacturers are now recommending. This is done on commercial projects as well.
Lloyd about: residential architects actually standard practice is the drip edge goes OVER the Ice & Water Shield.
Lloyd about: pop Who didn't?
Lloyd about: Baby Pauling yeah, their appointment got moved last week.
Lloyd about: Baby Pauling It is scheduled for 2pm tomorrow (Friday). According to Brad, Alicia has her announcement message ready to be sent on her phone. So once they have a free moment tomorrow, we will get an email or text message.
Lloyd about: Baby Pauling You may not hear from them today Abby. I believe they are both home enjoying one last quite day together.
Lloyd about: ARE fees So what does it cost to take the Bar Exam? I mean almost $1,500 is getting a little out of hand. Especially since a lot of employers will not pay for the exam, let along give you the time off to take the exam.
Lloyd about: ARE fees Are you kidding me. So they jack up the cost of the test with the new exam format. Now they are going to jack the price up again. Well hopefully I will be done before then.
Lloyd about: Are you f'n kidding me?! It is organizations like PETA and GREENPEACE that do these in your face campaigns that actually makes everyone take a step back and think the environmental movement is just a bunch of wack jobs. PETA Calls Obama's Kung Fu Fly Swat an "Execution"
Lloyd about: Competition is live!! Ok everyone, after 6 months of work it is finally here. The AIA Ohio Affordable Green Home Design Competition is up and running and now officially started.
Lloyd about: energy software? Well look into IES then. They have plugins that work with sketchup (free version sucks) but i believe they are also trying to do plugins for BIM.
Lloyd about: energy software? Actually for an architects use, eQuest is perfect. Because how often will we actually design systems? We can just stick with the defaults and only worry about the envelope. And actually eQuest runs the daylighting calculations more effectively and is actually somewhere around 30% better than the other programs.
HAP from what I understand is very complicated and expensive. That is a program for the engineers to use. But if you are just running schematic level analysis, even with the short comings of eQuest, it is all an architecture firm really needs.
Lloyd about: energy software? A good one is eQuest. It is a free software and is pretty powerful and not that difficult to set up. Well minus all the technical stuff you need to know to set up your base building. But it will allow you to do comparisons of different systems and design/construction strategies. The OSFC is actually requiring all design teams in Ohio to utilize this program on their projects.
Lloyd about: I figured out Shania Twain really, are you that bored?
Lloyd about: Stalkers Ha, if I get laid off, I will have a new full time job with lots of responsibility and little respect. No not working for another architecture firm. It's called Mr. Mom.
Lloyd about: Stalkers I noticed on the Today Show this morning the title of the headline for the missing flight was LOST, and it made me think of the same thing.
And Berg, in terms of the job loss, a lot of the people that I know are living off of unemployment and finding some side work or consulting/contract work with firms that need a little help but can't afford to hire full time staff.
Lloyd about: ok, have to share So how do you doing a spinning back flip kick if you are the controller? Do you just flip the bird? It's a pretty cool concept, but I think it is limited.
Lloyd about: ok, have to share 4th of July weekend for us is going to include lakeside property, water volleyball, 10ft high bonfires all along the shore. As well participating in the fireworks show that will stretch at least a mile along the shore of the lake. So thank you PA for conveniently locating firework stores along 90.
Lloyd about: holiday weekend recap...... When you are done at Brad's you can come over and help with mine. I need to repair my retaining wall.
Lloyd about: weekend musings tis the season to bring the table saw outside and get the compressor running again.
Lloyd about: afternoon funnies Ok, so I had to read them again for some more entertainment. This one is great
(404): FYI..good luck when you get back from work.. mom and dad know about the boy you brought home last night
(1-404): haha good one..how did you even know?
(404): we all know. he obviously didn't leave when you might have told him to.. he came down when we were eating because he coud smell mom's cooking. the dude ate with us and offered to say grace. so yeah, good luck.
Lloyd about: hmmm by the way, great photos bub.
Lloyd about: hmmm at one point didn't shoes on the power line mean there was a drug dealer in the area?
Lloyd about: Gone live Wes, I hope I answered your question regarding HERS with the revised website.
I hope some of you decide to enter the competition. New rules do not limit it to Ohio residents only. You just have to find someone with an Ohio license. Which I know some of you are.
Lloyd about: Competition Category (Rural, Suburban, Urban) information will not be available until the official launch of the competition on June 19th.
Lloyd about: Competition Once the category pages are up, there will be examples of what each typically builds. However go to the Cin. HFH website via the sponsors page, and they have photos of what they currently build.
Lloyd about: Competition Affordability will be addressed in each category as Habitat will define the budget.
Context, yes I know. Site context photos will be supplied. However they build the same damn houses all over the country.
HERS Index is a good FAQ.
Lloyd about: Competition Ok archi folks. A new competition that I have been organizing is a little over 6 weeks away from launching. I am looking to have the website go live tomorrow however. If you would not mind reviewing the website and the competition itself and throw questions at me about it, I would greatly appreciate it. I am looking to create an FAQ page and I know the competition in and out, so your input will be extremely valuable.
Lloyd about: movies and such I am excited about the GI Joe and Terminator movies, as well as Wolverine. According to Faulhammer the movie followed the comic book story line to a T. However Amy has no interest in those types of movies. So with the exception of Wolverine (birthday present) I will be watching those movies in the comfort of my own home when they come out on video.
Lloyd about: best commercial ever It must be one of those commercials that only play between the hours of midnight and 5am.
Lloyd about: Would You Live in a House Made of Sh*t? I assume our masons would not like working in wet conditions with this product. Would You Live in a House Made of Sh*t?
Lloyd about: animals are funny If you think they are so cute, then come to my house. I think we still get 3 or 4 a night that come through our yard looking for food. The previous owner and neighbor use to feed them peanut butter sandwiches for 20 years.
Lloyd about: paris hilton I tried posting to the rant page, but labeled it as spam.
Lloyd about: who moved my cheese? I guess I should be glad that we use microstation. I was just happy we can now use key commands.
Lloyd about: news jlloyd@symhome.net
Lloyd about: news Congrats from me and Amy!!
Lloyd about: indians - yankees I loved growing up and being able to hear the announcers and the crowd cheer for the AAA team in my front yard.
Lloyd about: where is everyone? Sorry, my only good story is that we bought a new car and had lunch at Great Lakes Brewery and was able to sample their new Grassroots Ale.
Lloyd about: Cool? or Fugly? What about the lack of a roof overhang. The edge detail is just screaming for water problems.
I like art, I love architecture, but I am a true believer that you need to fit you context. And this does not do it. There is a straw bale home in Cleveland two minutes from Becky's house an you would never even know it was a straw bale home because it matched it surroundings so well.
Lloyd about: octomom The question is, what ever house she lives in, does it need to be rezoned due to the amount of occupants?
Lloyd about: NCARB blows, but GBCI sucks Amy was able to log on and register earlier today.
Lloyd about: On another note I never thought my point of view would EVER be in line with Thews. I guess that is why I am a swing vote.
Lloyd about: NCARB blows, but GBCI sucks Ohio did not pass a law that school buildings have to meet LEED standards. The OSFC is a funding source for school districts to rebuild their schools. Now I can have Amy jump on and give specifics. But the OSFC offers money to the school districts that come with stipulations. So the school districts have the choice to accept the money or not. And Ohio and the OSFC determined that it is money well spent to design and build more energy efficient schools.
Lloyd about: NCARB blows, but GBCI sucks No, I don't thing regulation is where we want to go. It's about education, and that is one good thing that is coming out of this recession/depression. Is people are finally beginning to think about conserving. And more than just energy. I mean just the huge increase of reusable shopping bags use is amazing. That was primarily driven by our capitalistic society. Companies such as grocery stores realized that if they sold the reusable bags at a loss, they would still come out ahead because they do not have to purchase as many plastic bags. That idea started with one person.
Same thing with the new LEED requirement for all Ohio schools. It started with one person down in Cincinnatti that did a presentation to one of the local school boards that ended up building the first LEED school in Ohio. That grabbed the attention of other school districts and the OSFC. And look at where we are now with that. Think of the amount of people that are now being educated by this either directly or indirectly.
Lloyd about: NCARB blows, but GBCI sucks Berg, do you buy bottled water? If so do you recycle 100% of the bottles that you use? Do you use cloth napkins? If not, you are a part of the problem. We are producing larger quantities of plastic at other cheap products because the average consumer (citizen) wants cheap convenient products. So until this urge to be carrying around your own personal disposable bottle of water ends, the use of cheap plastics are going to continue. So unless you are practicing what you preach, you don't have any real room to bitch.
Lloyd about: LEED 2009 In response to Aaron post about LEED evolving, here is a really good review of the new LEED 2009 that was posted yesterday. Real Life LEED
Lloyd about: Potentially a rant Thews, if you can look past some of the dramatized portions of the presentation, Al Gore's Inconvenient truth lays out some pretty solid facts about increased CO2 emissions. We had a presentation from Lonnie Thompson that is here in Columbus a couple of years ago, and he is the one who provided 90% of the data in Al Gore's presentation.
Lloyd about: NCARB blows But who did not know that. So Berg & Biggie, did you know that if you wanted to take the new 4.0 structures exam, you can not take it until July after the transition period is over.
Lloyd about: geothermal A heat pump is more efficient to use than a gas furnace. So if you are using a ground source heat pump instead of your standard air source, you are doing even better.
However if the power plant produces the electricity uses coal, only about 31% of the power going into the plant actually gets to your home. So there is a lot of wasted energy/CO2 with electricity.
So to answer you question of which one is more sustainable. I would say electricity because that can be produced by renewable means. Where gas is still a natural resource that will run out someday. Unless we scorch the sun, solar and wind should never run out.
Lloyd about: geothermal then where the hell did geothermal come into play? Or are you building a geothermal plant. Anyways, everything has trade offs, you will drive your self nuts trying to figure this shit out. Not alone trying to convince everyone that your way is the best way. Pick your battles wisely. The less turbulence you create, the more effect you will actually have at making change.
Lloyd about: geothermal Fist Geothermal is a utility scale energy source. What you are talking about is a ground source heat pump. This is a common misunderstanding. However it is still a hard sell for geothermal because upfront costs are close $18,000 for a home. Granted the federal government just past a new tax CREDIT of 30% of the installed system until 2016.
Lloyd about: No, I am just dealing with ass hole board members all over the state of Ohio. Every AIA component board is in support of the design competition I am organizing, but none of them are willing to make comments or appoint someone to support the efforts.
The only thing I get is that we are behind schedule. Well assholes, fucking give me straight forward comments, not shit that causes the whole process to go in a circle. Fuck them!! Their careers are limited and mine is just beginning.
Can you tell I am pissed?
Lloyd about: damn new yorkers Hey, just want to vent my frustrations with a small town building department in New York that will not let us submit for a zoning variance until we submit for a building permit. Which at that time they will reject our building permit application because we do not meet the zone code for lot sizes. Then only then can we submit for a variance. WTF kind of ass backwards way of working is that. What if we designed something that was outrageously huge. Would they not grant us a variance? The owner would be up shits creek and have to pay our fees for something that they can not even build.
Lloyd about: Cuteness You have a good looking little boy there. It looks like Thews has jumped right into the Dad role and is loving it.
It is a great trip, enjoy it!
Lloyd about: italy I would have to say a Garbage Plate with macaroni salad, home fries and all the toppings from the former Nick Tahoes in Rochester. mmmmm.....It is a heart attack waiting to happen. I can't wait to go back home so I can have a plate, my blood is flowing a little freely lately.
Lloyd about: prof hughes Well you guys must have started the trend, because my year was also told not to bring model building supplies. Yet every class had to build a model. However I said fuck it and refused. Granted my grade reflected that decision. But WTF, I still graduated and was able to spend 5 months in Europe.
Lloyd about: ARE Well then they should just stop grading the 4.0 until we are done with 3.1. I think that is a fair solution.
Lloyd about: ARE Well I took BT on December 31st and it took about 6 weeks. And I took SP a month ago and I am still waiting for results.
Lloyd about: ARE Berg,
I don't think you will save any money because even though there are only 7 exams in 4.0, the overall cost of the tests are a couple hundred dollars more.
However I am doing the same thing as biggie, and saving structural for last. I just recieved last week that I passed BT, and I am awaiting to hear on BP & SP.
Lloyd about: LEED AP NO....A LEED AP working on a LEED project only gains one credit towards certification. So you do not need a LEED AP working on a project for a building to be LEED certified.
Lloyd about: how old is your brain? My brain is at 26.
Lloyd about: site update Ok, go back to the nontechnical person such as Biggie. What would he use to read the RSS feeds so he does not have to log on to BDC but still get the updates?
Lloyd about: site update So what do you use for all of your RSS feeds bub?
Lloyd about: 15 Reasons Why You Should be Having Sex... Right Now! No, it works Berg. Amy's first labor was just under 6 hours and the last one was less than 2.
But no, we were being told a story about one of his patients coming in every few hours because she thought she was going in labor. And he wanted to tell her to just go home and have sex because semen has some of the same chemicals as what they give women to induce them.
Lloyd about: 15 Reasons Why You Should be Having Sex... Right Now! I guess this should really be posted by Greenberg, but hey..... who is really going to complain. And for those ladies that are pregnant, #3 is true. Our doctor friend verified it with our first one
Lloyd about: tell them you will buy a season pass if you got the job. I would.... I miss skiing.
Lloyd about: Congratulations!! Congrats Becky! I guess your crazy idea paid off.
Lloyd about: LEED Update Ok, a few of my statements about taking the LEED exam need to be stricken from the records. According to the attached article, Legacy AP's who opt-in will be given one of the new AP+ designations based upon their actual experience.
Lloyd about: website You are looking at flash for the rings. html is not powerful enough for that.
As for sketchup renderings, Brad has been using a pretty good free program and tested VRAY, awesome images, but expensive.
Lloyd about: weather It is because they are the people who have moved to buffalo from Ohio.
Lloyd about: google streets Because you think you know everything.
Lloyd about: ugh! yeah, it was fun chipping the ice off of two cars this morning just so I could get to work. It was fun driving this morning though(not kidding). Brought me back to my days back in Rochester. And since traffic was light this morning, I was flying.
So an hour and half to get to work yesterday with NO precipitation and decent roads. 25 minutes today with freezing rain turning to snow and shitty roads. Oh I loved it.
Lloyd about: LEED help again yes, we have a LEED project under construction now. Academic Center E
Lloyd about: LEED help again Well in a word, yes. Although that may be their intention. But think of it this way. You have two interns applying for a job and they are both LEED AP's. As of right now, the first applicant could have taken the exam while in school and passed, but has no office experience. The second applicant has been working for a couple of years, and may have worked on a project.
Ultimately they are trying to level out the playing field so when a client receives a bunch of RFQ's it will be easier for them to tell who has actual experience and who does not. Now I also realize there are some of us that got the accredidation because it is what they believe in, but have not had the chance to actually work on a project yet. That is exactly why they created the associate exam. So you can take the associate exam to show you have the basic knowledge, and then when you get actual experience take the AP exam or what is considered part 2.
Lloyd about: LEED help again I guess the expert needs to chime in. First the continuing education credits are 30 every TWO years for the USGBC. And they will overlap with AIA. AIA now requires 4 Sustainable Design (SD) learning units every year and they correlate with the 6 HSW units required. So 4 of your 6 HSW can be SD units.
As for taking the exam now or later. Yes, you will have to have a project under your belt to qualify to take the exam. But Abby and Derek are better off and waiting to take the exam. Because the current test for one does not test you on ND issues. And the idea of the credentialing is to basically tell people who actually knows there stuff. So if you were to take it now, you would become what they are considering a LEGACY AP. Which basically says you were an early adopter and truly believe, OR you took it for marketing reasons and don't give a shit and are just a good test taker. Plus you will still have to opt into the LEGACY designation which then you have your $50 fee to pay every two years (the first cycle is waived). And if you don't opt in, you become an inactive member. Also, if I remember correctly, all LEGACY AP's will not be listed on the website as accredited professionals.
Lloyd about: on a serious note Again congrats guys! Benjamin will love playing with little Pauling.
Lloyd about: sports guy Sweeny, I use to love that movie. I remember watching it, sitting in the video department at my dads store while I waited for him to do his rounds.
Lloyd about: karma That is a boy!?!?!?
Lloyd about: working Bub Congrats man!
Lloyd about: the one i can remember Cathryn, it was J.J. Catherdral pub. And Murphy's was the name of the beer that was etched on the glass.
I know that place well. I stopped in there for at least one drink everyday. I loved the fact that upstairs you could literally stretch out your arms and touch both walls of the bar.
Lloyd about: cheap homes So who in the Cleveland area is in the market for a new home? Radical cheap: $1,000 homes
Lloyd about: happy birthday wes!
Lloyd about: LEED Berg, the current and earlier versions of LEED were to do one simple thing, and that is to be an agent of change. And yes, it has focused on the materials and the manufacturing process. But it has done a very good job of getting everyone aware of the issues. So as it's original goal of industry change, it has done that. Granted not perfect, but things are still evolving. Now with the new versions of LEED they are focusing much more on energy and water conservation, as well as regionalism, with must less attention on materials.
As for your issue with plastics and low VOC. Plastics are like automobiles. They manufacturer what the consumer wants. What I mean is every automobile (except the civilian hummer) has is designed purpose. Now it is the consumer who choses how to use it. I mean why does my 5' tall sister in-law need a Dodge Ram 1500. She doesn't need it, she wants it. So Dodge makes them. As for the manufacturing of low-VOC and energy efficient products. We will take insulation as an example. The foam products are typically petroleum based (bad). However the amount of energy that they save over the span of their life outweighs the footprint of the manufacturing process.
So you are right to say why do we manufacturer these things or why do we design/build substandard buildings. Well it is what people want unfortunately. Someday LEED will be no longer. But that will not be until everyone realizes the consequence to the cheap strip malls that GREEDY developers slap up in a couple months and the hack architects that do the work for them.
Lloyd about: LEED Berg, in theory yes. My mind set is green design is just good design. LEED is just trying to get rid of the hack architects. Plus LEED is just designing a better than code compliant building in terms of energy anyway. Everything they reference are already code standards as it is.
Lloyd about: LEED Well the rules for Ohio's HB 251 are going to be up for public comment here this month. And if it passes, in mid February of this year, all state funded building will have to meet LEED silver as well as be inline with the Architecture 2030 programs target goals. Those of you in Ohio, if you want to see the document, email me and I can forward the document to you as a heads up.
As it relates to school work however, with Amy's new job, it is interesting hearing her stories about all the architects that know absolutely nothing about LEED and they are now required to do it. So it is going to be a long and difficult process for those school districts.
Lloyd about: LEED All Ohio schools have to get certified now. Minimum silver level.
Lloyd about: LEED Well in regards to the new "Credentialing", you have to go to the newly formed GBCI that handles all the exams. As for LEED 2009, I watched some of the live broadcasts of greenbuild online which discussed some of the dates. www.greenbuild360.org should have them archived. I need to stay up to date with this stuff since I am the AIA COTE chair. Another thing also is LEED will now be rolling out new versions every 2 years.
Lloyd about: LEED The biggest difference with the new accreditation is going to be the tiered levels. Associate level for all the schmucks, and the actual AP for people who actually know what they are talking about and have experience. Because once they change the exam format, the only way you can qualify for the AP exam is if you have at least one project under your belt. So I am toying with Beta testing the new LEED for Homes exam so I don't have to pay for it.
Oh, if you do take it now, you will become a LEGACY AP. And don't forget the annual dues that you will have to pay.
Lloyd about: speaking of skiing... I would love to get on the slopes as well.
Lloyd about: work Berg, if you have the energy and patience to play Madden at 4am while holding a child, you will be amazing. Maybe the first couple of nights, but after a week or so, it gets old real fast.
Lloyd about: peer question We have. However the competition will be running during the summer months with the winners being announced at the AIA Ohio regional convention in October. So submissions will be due late August. Oh yeah, so there will be free admission to the convention for the winners as well. Plus the AIA is really trying to get their younger members more involved.
Lloyd about: peer question Well how much do you think would be a fair amount of prize money to go your way? I am thinking $1,000 for first place team along with the stipend to the firm (unless you are registered. $600 for second and $400 for third.
Lloyd about: peer question Well I guess the bigger issue is not how much the stipend would be, or how it would be looked at in your office but rather would you consider entering a competition if all the prize money went to your firm. Or would you like to see an additional say $500 go directly to the winning team in addition to the stipend.
Lloyd about: peer question Ok, I have a question for all you "associates & emerging professionals". I am spearheading a state wide design competition for an affordable green home for Habitat for Humanity. Now the logistics are still being worked out, but the winning team or teams will receive a stipend of approximately $8,000 to produce the CD's. Now if that money was going directly to your firm so you can produce the set on office time with office equipment, would you be compelled to enter the competition.
Now this is more geared to the unregistered architects, but can apply to the registered architects as well. The idea is habitat will then become a paying client and there will be a deadline to get the set of drawings done. What are your thoughts?
Lloyd about: SNOW Well as for snow here in Columbus, we have virtually nothing. So I am glad we are going to Rochester so we can have a white Christmas. So I may have to change my Friday plans and go skiing.
Lloyd about: SNOW Are you freaking kidding me Wes & Leanne?!?!?! Great, sounds like our travels are going to be fun. Weather.com said it is suppose to be snowing all day tomorrow, but does you local weather say what the severity of it is expected to be.
Well I am glad I just made arrangements to stay the night with family friends in Buffalo then.
Lloyd about: SNOW So what is the extended forecast for the Buffalo area? We are planning on driving through Tuesday evening.
Lloyd about: technological advances Hell, why not just put sensors everywhere. Then you will not need refs anymore.
Lloyd about: Berg's dream Here is a craigslist posting that I think Greenberg would enjoy. Pink Upholstered Vagina Couch
Lloyd about: Brad Well Brad and Alicia will be back in town next week. So I can always ask him if they want to join us on Friday when he comes into the office.
Lloyd about: Cbus Friday Any suggestions on where to meet up next week? If you want to see the little ones we can always meet at a Winking Lizard. Our kids love the bars. Although I do not think they have bubble hockey as you have requested Andy.
Lloyd about: Brad Unfortunately Berg, Brad is not bored. He is sunning himself on a nice beach on St. John's right now.
Lloyd about: modern technology Hell, we still only have basic cable at my house. So we don't have channels like ESPN, or Discovery. I want my Myth Busters! Instead I get wonder pets and Dora.
Lloyd about: Bored? For those of you who are looking to kill a little time AND be a ninja. Ninja Quest
Lloyd about: Amy Oh, for those of you who do not know, yesterday was Amy's last day at M&A. She took a nice cushy job with the Ohio Schools Facility Commission and starts next week.
Lloyd about: Stupid people I am so glad this shit is over today. One for the political ads to stop, and second so all the damn people will stop coming into our office to ask how to get upstairs or where the McCain office is. The sign as well as elevator & stairs are 10 feet from our door.
And yes, I voted. I waited an hour and a half, Amy waited about 20 minutes.
Lloyd about: Morning! Did you happen to pull a Brad and fall through this said hole?
Lloyd about: What I did for 5 months... That looks great. Isn't nice to actually build something once in awhile.
Lloyd about: google Well I need to check my coding, because I don't think that radius is correct. It should actually extend to the eastern border of Kansas City and Minneapolis as well. So it makes it even better for Ohio.
Lloyd about: google the 500 mile radius map that I posted last week. 500 Mile Radius
Lloyd about: google Abby, I think it is only on your end. Everything works fine here.
You almost threw me into a frenzy because I was up late again last night trying to program a custom google map that is still not working the way I want it to. So when I saw google not working I was almost livid.
Lloyd about: LEED Regional Materials For those of you who have been working on LEED projects I have been working on a web tool that will help project teams determine their 500 mile radius from the project site. Because the way LEED sees it, it is a 500 mile straight line from the site. So to plug in your site and manufacturing plant on google maps for directions, you get the driving distance. Unless you do what my office has done and ordered a USA map, put a pin in the location and drew the circle. So check out the link and let me know what other features would be helpful to you or your firm.
I am hoping to develop this to be a very useful tool for the design teams as well as spec writers. (The webtool currently only work with Firefox web browser) Regional materials map
Lloyd about: protesters It was a pretty week protest. Yoga class lasted longer than the actual protest did. I took a couple of pictures for entertainment value. So as soon as I find out how to post them to BDC I will.
Lloyd about: protesters Well here is the organization protesting. SEIU
Lloyd about: baseball skeeter on my peter whack it off, whack it off!
Lloyd about: baseball Oh, I hear about the yankees and OSU history everytime I am around the stadium with my father-in-law. Oh and not to mention when Jeter was at the National Championship game watching on the field.
Lloyd about: baseball The Yankees were in Columbus because of Steinbrenner. He did his post graduate work at OSU and was a grad assistant for Woody Hayes. He also met his wife there. She even funded the music building at OSU as well.
Lloyd about: bublicans Ok I hope to post some nice pictures todays. Our office was just notified that a protest will be happening in front of our building today so they are locking the building down from 11am, until they leave. And for those of you that do not know, John McCain's Columbus campaign office is in our building.
Lloyd about: as promised The shelves are designed to actually let the little ones climb up them to get things on the top shelf. They actually hold my weight.
I am still playing with the idea of painting the vertical walls on the inside of some of those shelves to match the wall color so it makes the shelfs that already extend from the wall really pop out as they are individual boxes stacked up.
Lloyd about: roofing Andy, and that is why I had a roof top delivery when we re-roofed our house. The only thing that sucked though was we had to tear off every single sheet of plywood because it was in shitty condition.
Here are some pictures of the fun we had. Oh, it averaged 95 degrees the 3 days we were up there. Roofing pictures
Lloyd about: good weekends? It wasn't too bad as long as you are comfortable with removing/replaceing roofing material. Oh and cutting a hole in the roof. The hardest part is aligning the reflective tunnels to fit properly.
Lloyd about: good weekends? And yes, happy belated dirty 30 Abby!!
Lloyd about: good weekends? The sun tunnel leads to the hallway by the bedrooms. It has always been dark, so it was the perfect application. It works great, but now everyone keeps flipping the light switch because they think a light is on. I just wish the damn thing wasn't sitting in my garage for a year before I actually installed it.
Lloyd about: good weekends? Sorry, nothing too exciting. I made labor day weekend true to it's name and busted my ass around the house. Again spending another 85 degree day on the roof and in the attic installing a sun tunnel. But the basement is oh so close to being done. I will post some pictures next Monday for all the flooring will be laid by then. Minus the new bathroom, I am down to trim work.
Lloyd about: Speaking of Kent So who knew that Kent St. will be playing Boston College this coming weekend at the Browns Stadium? And I guess Kent State Alumni Association is having a tailgate party on W. 6th St.
Lloyd about: holy shit Well, I guess my class just wasn't as awesome as yours. That is why I married into it.
Lloyd about: holy shit I wonder if the show is going to glorify architecture school to the point where more kids will enroll. Or will it be more inline with what we remember. Late nights, very little little social life outside of our classmates and the almost daily anal cavity search from the professor.
Lloyd about: holy shit I wish my TV wasn't broken, and I wish I had cable to watch it. Hopefully they will post their full episodes online.
Lloyd about: da browns Oh, I heard about that. Now that swimming is done, I am pretty much done with the Olympics.
Well except for the women's volleyball finals tonight. I like to watch them give signals before each serve.
Lloyd about: da browns I don't believe I am going to ask, but what happened on the parallel bars?
Lloyd about: Porn that is ok to view at work Here is a very inspiring porn site that even your boss would say...."How did they do that?" Stair porn
Lloyd about: vacation I am stuck here in the office as well. As exciting as it is.
Lloyd about: nomorepansychildren.com Ok, so a few of you heard me say this competition weekend. But the article below just makes a stronger case to start our own website. New Study: Kids Need the Adventure of "Risky" Play
Lloyd about: Competition Weekend It was good to see everyone this weekend and Kaelynn would like Mante to visit again.
Lloyd about: Competition Well we will be around tomorrow to cheer everyone on. So watch out for the littlest of cheer leaders. I have been teaching her how to say "good game" with the nice little pat on the butt.
Lloyd about: to spark conversation Well there goes bubdotcom. You would not be able to post your comments all day long. Unless you really wanted to listen to the computer reading everything to you. At that point, what ever job you had, you would not have it for long because someone in the office would get offended about something.
In other words, I pick deaf. It means you can not hear screaming kids.
Lloyd about: proposal Hey, send me an outline and I will have Kaelynn color it in for you. She loves to color!
Lloyd about: proposal The sad thing is, they will find someone that will do it. So my suggestion is to take an old rendering and give it to them. Then when the planning board meeting rejects it, you generate the real one for them.
Lloyd about: interview question Who would argue if you were at work or not if you were invisible. For all they know you are in the bathroom taking a dump. But who wants to be the perv to be sitting in the rest room waiting to hear the kerplunk to verify it.
Lloyd about: interview question So what about when it rains? it would really suck to be flying through a rain storm. You would have to wear some stupid looking goggles.
Don't tell me you would fly above the rain cloud. Because eventually you have to fly underneath it to get to your destination.
Lloyd about: NY liscense Any of you NY residents registered yet? I have a guy who lives here in Columbus that wants to work with me on an addition to a cottage they have at Chautauqua lake. Unfortunately my office does not have a NY stamp and the size of the job does not justify the cost to get it. This would be a collaborative effort.
Lloyd about: interview question that is wrong, the correct answer is pirate. Why you ask, because a ninja is basically a loner where pirates work as a team.
Which I do not agree with that logic because usually pirates are a lawless group where ninja live by a much higher standard and yes, they both kill, but ninjas do live by a moral code.
Lloyd about: interview question Well I have one for you. What would you rather be, a pirate or a ninja?
Lloyd about: MXC I just had to watch last night.
Lloyd about: Wipeout That's it. I remember watching it the first time. We were hanging out with one of Amy's friends and their dad called and said change it to what ever station and we laughed our asses off.
Lloyd about: Wipeout So how was the show in general. Our TV shit the bed about a week ago and we are going to see how long we can go without one. So obviously I was unable to catch the premiere of Wipeout. I was talking to Amy and told her if the commentary was not funny, the show would suck. Who every watched the Japaneses version of the show where they dubbed over all the commentary?
Lloyd about: holy crap Man, my brother would be the next oil or gas tycoon if someone could come up with a way to harvest the methane from his ass.
Lloyd about: Wegmans Cathryn, I just got work over the weekend that Wegmans is moving up your way. One of my family friends will be transfered to the Boston area for the grand opening of a new store. Now I am not sure of the locations, but I was told they plan on having 5 or 6 stores in the area by 2010. So I am sure they will move in your direction.
Lloyd about: camera recs? Yeah, I like the Canons. Amy and I have the 570i I believe. My only complaint with the camera is because it only takes two AA batteries, it does not last as long as our old camera which had a battery pack.
Lloyd about: Baseball Wes, you said met. It is more like meet. People are still that narrow minded. As for the bitching, I really can't say anything about that because I consistently bitch about Columbus in some form or fashion.
Lloyd about: Baseball I know I will receive a verbal lashing, but I resent any negative comments toward the Yankees. And I am not a bandwagon fan. Since I am originally a NYS resident, I have been a fan of the Yankees for as long as I can remember. And lets not forget that between the years of 1979 and 1995 the Yankees sucked.
Lloyd about: George Carlin Yeah, I saw the news. I am glad I was able to see his performance live before he passed away.
Lloyd about: Pregnancy pact So Cathryn & Andy, what do you think of the pregnancy pact?
Lloyd about: NCARB I agree with you wes on the ARE forum. Those people just induce additional panic and confusion. I would rather study published data. Not an internet post from someone that I do not know.
Lloyd about: NCARB No, Amy is not registered yet. Kids and the hate she has for her office has made her come to a screeching halt with the exams. But seeing me study and take the exams with our two kids, she is realizing again that it can be done. Now we just need to get her a new job.
And same here, you can sign our the study guides from the AIA office for two weeks.
Lloyd about: NCARB Actually I was just talking to Kaplen a couple of days ago and the overall content for the study guides is the same between 3.1 & 4.0. They just shuffled the content around to better align with new exams. So 3.1 material is still valid to study from.
Because as part of my scholarship I get a free set of study guides. But I am trying to compete 3.1 version, am an deciding if I should get the 3.1 version study guides or the 4.0 so obviously Amy could benefit from them as well.
Lloyd about: Selling electricity
Well I know it may not be exciting to some, but I thought it was pretty cool to see an electric meter running backwards. I would post a picture of the house, but I forgot how to do that.
Lloyd about: Lostophiles It was good, I watch the entire 3 hours because I missed part one a couple weeks ago. But after a brief discussion with Brad about it this morning, I definitely don't read that deep into the show. Because he was telling me stuff that I have never picked up.
Still it answered a lot of things for me, but obviously gave me a headache.
Lloyd about: zzzzz oppps, I meant summer, not month.
Lloyd about: zzzzz Never ending is an understatement. Memorial day weekend was the 1 year anniversary of the start of our major home renovations. Or well at least what requires a permit to do. I am hoping to be done with everything by the end of the month.
And Kaelynn is a big help. She actually helped me install a door frame last week. And she is good at putting screws on the end of my cordless drill.
Lloyd about: zzzzz I pretty much did the same thing. Getting to the final stages of the home renovations. But I did take a break on Monday to go to a parade with the kids as well as the new neighbor and her 3 year old daughter (Kaelynn's new best friend).
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples Well if you want to go it is at the Marriott Copley on Thursday from 6-7:30. Email Marti Ring and she can get you all the information you need. mkring1@kent.edu
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples Yeah, I plan on attending the reception.
I am surprised that you just received it. Amy and I got our over a month ago.
Lloyd about: ARE: Site Design Yeah, pending me passing CD's I will be going for 3.1 as well. But I figured I have to have all the test taken by January to give myself time to retake any that I may fail. So I do not have to work at the break neck speed you are going at.
Lloyd about: ARE: Site Design Damn Berg, isn't this your second test in 3 weeks?
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples Should say "next week."
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples Cathryn & Andy, thanks for the offer to stay at your place. But I will be staying with Scott Clymire from my year who will also be at the convention. So I am excited to be in Boston most of next.
Are the two of you going to attend the Kent State Alumni reception next Thursday evening?
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples It is the AIA National (your favorite organization) convention.
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples I will let you know. Clymire from my class is going to be there as well, so I am going to see if I can piggy back on his hotel room first.
I won that ARE Scholarship and now they are asking me to attend the convention to recieve my award at the National Associate Reception next Thursday evening.
Lloyd about: Boston area peoples So who can put me up in the Boston area for the convention next Wednesday and Thursday night.
Lloyd about: \\\\\\\"architect\\\\\\\" We would probably have not gotten a permit for the majority of the work if it was not for our nosy neighbor who sits on City Council.
Lloyd about: \\\"architect\\\" Oh, by the way Berg. I have not been tested on that yet either and I know that information. So catch up slacker.
Lloyd about: \\\"architect\\\" Most work does require a permit, even if it does not require structural changes. Amy and I were suppose to get a demolition permit before doing the work on our house. These rules change from town to town. Just call the building department to see what work triggers a building permit.
But Biggie is right, the condo may qualify as multi-family which will then require a stamp.
Lloyd about: Poop Freeze For all of you dog owners that hate picking up steamy piles of shit. Here is a product for your next dog walk.
Lloyd about: Pencil Dick That is awesome!! Call him back Brad, lets take him up on the offer. Even though I already did the jig.
He was a waste of space. Everyone in the office thinks we will do much better without this guy. He contributed NOTHING except for headaches to the people that had to work with him.
Lloyd about: a.r.e. Dude, why?!?!? I attended that review session this past weekend and a couple of people were using the ARE forum as a resource and it freaked them out even more. She even shared a couple of the chat threads with the class, and the instructor just kind of laughed because the people were not even going in the right direction. I figured, I create enough stress on myself for the tests, I don't need others doing it as well.
Lloyd about: a.r.e Yeah, Kaplan creates the standard set of review guides.
Lloyd about: a.r.e New study guides for 4.0 are now available to purchase. Other than that, the study guides refer to HOK guidebook to sustainable design, Building construction illustrated, Architectural Professional Handbook and a bunch of others to use as reference.
Lloyd about: a.r.e Phone (614) 466-2316
Lloyd about: Firefox Figured it out. You have to go thru your OS explorer.
Lloyd about: Firefox Ok so how do I explore an ftp site with firefox?
Lloyd about: hockey not that I have have been following hockey at all the past couple of years, but I thought I would interject.
I ate/drank at jagr's bar in Prague back in 2000. I even bought an autographed Jagr Czech Republic jersey and gave it to my brother because he was such a huge fan.
Lloyd about: ARE Berg, if you are going to stick with 3.1 AIA columbus is going to be having review sessions every month. So check out the website for the schedule if you are interested. ARE review sessions
Lloyd about: ARE Sorry Berg, it is from 9am - 1pm tomorrow morning.
Lloyd about: ARE The review session is from 8am to 1pm. It is also $20 to attend.
Lloyd about: ARE I am taking CD's on Monday. AIA Columbus is having a 4 hour review session tomorrow however that I will be attending.
Lloyd about: Said, Saeed, Sayid So who is right on the spelling. I am actually worked with a Said in Cleveland and he spelled it like the word said.
Lloyd about: I want to meet Jacob She said October. So now Penolope is going to die? So how many twists are they going to add to this show before it comes to an end.
Lloyd about: I want to meet Jacob Ok Wes, oh master of LOST. What year does this show take place? I thought it was in the present? But Ben was in the middle east in 2005 and met up with Said. Which I am assuming is after he got off the island.
Lloyd about: Portfolio Abby, I know this may be a little late, but see if you can get a copy of "direct connection" that is published by NCARB. A few copies just showed up in my office. It has basic ethics guidelines as it relates to taking work for your portfolio.
Lloyd about: In Rochester the cut-off date was November 30th.
Lloyd about: Burritos, Chimichangas, Taco Salad . . . oh my Ok, I was just about to ask how did he get to own a business if he was an illegal alien. Then I read the guy was using the birth certificate of a dead man.
Lloyd about: olympics I want to see the shop drawings for that project.
Lloyd about: ARE Berg, thanks for the names. It took almost two days, but I am scheduled for my first test now. So after getting sloppy drunk this weekend in Rochester for my brothers bachelor party, I have two solid weeks to study.
Lloyd about: cheerleader beating I heard one of the girls asked if they would be released in time to make practice.
Lloyd about: I mean "right", however they may not be able to write as well.
Lloyd about: Does it never end?! Well I went online to schedule an exam, but my identification number is not being recognized. WTF!!! So I call prometric since that is where the authorization to test comes from. They tell me that they are getting the same error message and give me another number to call. HELLO NCARB! Again WTF!!!! So the women with no social skills what so ever asks for my ID number and says she just reset it and I should be able to schedule my exam by 4:30 today. Can NCARB get nothing write?
Lloyd about: ARE pain Yes, each test cost more money for a grand total of an additional $300 more than ARE 3.1. So I believe the grand total is around $1400 for ARE 4.0.
Must be nice to have your firm pay for it. I am hoping to hear some good news at the end of this month because I applied for the same ARE scholarship that Becky won a couple of years ago.
Lloyd about: ARE pain Yeah, I got that as well. So I am scheduling my first test for the end of this month. I really don't want to pay the additional $300 to take 4.0.
Nothing like having a hot fire lit under your ass when you don't expect it. I am just glad to have a few weeks to study first.
Lloyd about: Skybus The worst part about skybus folding is not that some of us have lost tickets, but the people that they left stranded. Their employees were not even notified and showed up to work.
Lloyd about: work question Berg, did you just need something to bitch about? If you want to write your own contracts, there is nothing stopping you. I worked for a firm that had their own contracts that they used for residential clients. However AIA has provided YOU and your firm a service by taking years of experience in the industry and the expense of a legal team to write the contract for you and anyone else to use. Yes, you have to pay a small fee to use the contracts, but they are continually updating them and I am sure their team understands the legalities much better than any of us (with the exception of Dougums).
As for the hatch, go ahead and use what you want. But for every little cock you will just be fielding 100 questions from prick contractors because they don't look at your legends. They just look for what they have seen for years.
Lloyd about: work question You would have the punch list first. Ideally the punch list will be complete before a certificate of substantial completion is issued. However as Abby states, sometimes the punch list items can linger and they then turn into warrenty items. But if major punch list items do not get corrected an architect can hold the certificate of substantial completion/final pay application. But as Brad just informed me, that document only really exists in private work. It does not exist in government work.
Lloyd about: Good Friday Abby, I still have my 401K plans with my previous two employers. So there is no rush to roll it over into a new plan. But yes, you can roll it over into your new employers plan or open an IRA. Amy and I have been talking about rolling our old plans into a Roth.
Now that is all I know, Amy handles all the financial research. So questions are better directed towards her.
Lloyd about: Ben Well good news came to us this morning!!! Benjamin will be coming home this evening after almost two weeks in the NICU.
Needless to say we are excited and can not wait to be able to hold him when ever we please. And now begins the real test to see how Kaelynn takes to him. She already gave me the look of "what, are you kidding about him living here?'". So it shall be entertaining to watch.
Lloyd about: weekend storm I remember doing that a few times when living at home in Rochester. You just finish removing a 3-4' high pile of snow at the apron, and 5 minutes after you finish the plow comes by again and puts it all back.
Lloyd about: weekend storm Leanne, if you ever hear me bitching about the amount of snow because I can not get around. I give you full permission to kick me in the nuts. Other than that, I still reserve the right to complain about the jack asses on the road and how this state can not handle the snow fall. However I was talking to Faulhammer over the weekend and he says he has seen more accidents due to rain in CA than he has ever seen due to snow here in Ohio.
Lloyd about: Weekend Storm In response to your post berg, we were only in a Level 2 warning in franklin county, however every surrounding county was a level 3.
My mother-in-law who was in Florida at the time actually had the balls to call me on Saturday and tell me not to drive to the hospital to see Amy and Ben. Let me tell you I exercised great restraint to not tell her to fuck off, I don't care what Gov. Strickland has to say about Ohioans staying home and not driving. I am only an Ohioan because I was adopted in to be a sex slave and to replenish the declining Ohio population.
Lloyd about: Weekend Storm Well the weekend storm here in Columbus is officially named Benjamin Joshua Lloyd. And he only brought 20" of snow with him. A new record for Columbus which was originally set in 1910. As long as you waited until later in the day to drive, it was not bad driving. I only came across one unplowed section on my way back to the hospital. Which was amazing to see 5 cars/trucks/SUV's stuck on the side of road in that 1 mile stretch. Dumb asses I say, dumb asses.
Oh by the way, there is no precipitation going on at this moment and none is expected for the entire day and also it has not snowed since Saturday night let me add and 246 schools in the central Ohio area are closed. Fuck the public schools, we are going to home school where my kids will not miss a day of fine education at the Lloyd Academy of Higher Learner and snow driving.
Lloyd about: Baby Boy Lloyd As promise here are some pictures of mom, baby and Kaelynn. Sorry, no name yet. Baby Boy Lloyd
Lloyd about: Baby Boy Lloyd (5 weeks early) Thank you everyone, it was quite a shock to us last night. So I am sitting here in Amy's room right now with her.
So here is the lowdown on last nights events. Amy started having contractions around 10:30pm last night, we rushed to the hospital, and when I say rushed, we left Kaelynn sleeping in her bed because we could not wait for Papa Scheetz to show up. So we got to the hospital around 11:45 and the little one was born at 12:10am this morning. Sorry no name yet. Now we knew this one would be a quick delivery since her first one was pretty fast. But this was rediculous. Now ladies, close your eyes because Amy did it all with no drugs this time. But do to the fact we were only here for 25 minutes before arrival, there was no time for pain medication. But she took it like a champ and with 3 big pushes he was out.
The little is in NICU because he is a premature baby. However he is 6lb 10oz and 19" long. The doctors are not exactly sure why Amy went into labor so soon, but her uterous started to pull away and that is what is believe to have triggered it. The baby's breathing was in a little distress at first, but his lungs are getting better and they have not needed to give him oxygen at any time to breathe.
The two things that will be hard on us is we can not have the little guy in the room with us like we had Kaelynn when she was born. Also depending on how is digestive track works with feed and breathing, he could be in the hospital for up to 2 or 3 weeks. So that is going to be very hard on us to leave him here.
Again thank you and I will post some pictures later today.
Lloyd about: lost Yeah, I thought we were getting answers at the beginning of the season. Now I wonder where the hell are they taking it. However I am not to the point where I go online and read all of theories.
Amy actually walked into the room 5 minutes after the show started, got confused (easily done with this show) and stormed out of the room.
Lloyd about: Lost Bub, new episodes of the Big Bang Theory start March 17th. I can't wait, that show is hilarious.
Lloyd about: NCARB Berg,
I was in the same boat. I filed my paper work last February and finally got my notification to test in November. I do not know if they took it off of their website, but it use to say the overall review process would take no more than 30 business days.
However if you are ready to start taking tests tomorrow, there is a new State Law in Ohio where you can take your ARE exam concurrently with IDP. So you can go that route to at least start taking your exams. The "review process" only requires a transcript I believe.
Lloyd about: NCARB That is part of their inefficiency. Some people go through the whole process with no problems what so ever. Some such as myself, and sounds like Dickey as well just fall between the cracks and get absolutely no service what so ever and it is like pulling teeth to get anything done. They have no standard way of operating. It is different for everyone.
Therefore until architects could come up with a ton of money to force the wide spread change, they have monopolized the system. But yes, it is even more frustrating when it is a private company versus the non-serving government that we all love and expect to perform to sub par levels.
Lloyd about: NCARB Amy Kobe has no real explanation why NCARB is so inefficient. However she does agree with the statement. She battles with them on a daily basis. Unfortunately her hands are tied in what she can actually do.
So good luck on that journey of taking them down. I hope you find a viable alternative. In the mean time, I will gladly sign a petition.
Lloyd about: NCARB About time you figured that out!
Lloyd about: today I have heard we won't even see the rebate check until late May or June. Which in the opinion of some, the recession they are trying to get us out of will be over.
Lloyd about: No meat served? Berg, here is a news clip for you. You can't eat the meat, but you can pay to watch it. No meat served?
Lloyd about: wedding dates Seriously Eric, how much do you really care what the napkins look like. That was a week long discussion with us. I must say, on my end it was easy until the last two months or so, then the stress kicked in hardcore. Ask Donna she knows about 75% of what went on.
Lloyd about: wedding dates Oh I agree, both parties should have an opinion. However for me, the only thing I really cared about was the location and that we had Great Lakes served. Other than that my opinion was just white noise. Especially after revisiting the issue the 3rd or 4th time.
Lloyd about: wedding dates Oh, by the way. Congratulations!!
Lloyd about: wedding dates Dude, suck it up! Everyone here had to put up with the wrath of the bride to be for a year plus. Here you are giving up after a week. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Just start every phrase with "That looks good....." and it will be easy sailing until the last month. Then nothing will save you.
Lloyd about: birthday happy birthday Leanne!
Lloyd about: Competition I believe what sparked the interest for June was the fact that Skybus just released the new dates for cheap-o flights for the months of June and July and he wanted the Englishes to have a chance to join. Who knows when they will release them for August and September. Because Amy and I have been waiting for the July tickets to be released for 3 months now. So we scored round trip for 3 of us up to Hartford for $260.
Also Brad should be back in the office by 2 today.
Lloyd about: Lost So even though Wes is on vacation this week, do you think he is going to sit in front of the TV tonight to watch the season premiere of Lost?
Lloyd about: Fletch Sorry berg, I can not agree or disagree with you on Fletch. I have never watched the movie. And if I actually did, it was not memorable enough for me.
Lloyd about: Panty Thief Nabbed by Police Greenberg, I thought they caught you there for a minute.
Lloyd about: I hate people Wes, I believe your boss deserves a beer from everyone for that comment. Because there are a lot of spineless architects out there that would "take it up the ass... and without much complaint!" to put it in Abby's words.
The only thing we can hope for is if we run our own firms, that we remember these conversations a force the stick the other way and at least get what we are deserved.
Unless you are a hack job architect. Then just bend over a take it.
Lloyd about: Other stuff Send Amy an email, she saves stuff like that. In terms of portfolios, I believe the etiquette is you can use photos and drawings from your firm as long as you state the firms name. However your future employer can not use the images and drawings in their portfolio. But you may want to check the ethics on the AIA website.
Lloyd about: docs I have to agree with Abby, nothing pisses me off more than having someone tell me they could do my job because they have gone thru the building or renovation process before.
And Wes, what school did you go to? I don't remember any ego stroking at Kent. Hell, I had a prof basically fake a heart attack and yell help when he first saw one of my projects. The ego just comes from perceived competition and responsibilities in the office.
Lloyd about: Skybus I only wish tickets were available for our trip to Rochester in February.
Lloyd about: What weekend! So are their any other chumps that have work all weekend. Or am I the only lucky one.
Lloyd about: It's official It's official, I received the email from Skybus this morning. Flights from Columbus to Niagara Falls start April 1st.
Lloyd about: Ahhhhh!!!!!!!! Wes, wait until you have a kid that wants you to crawl into spots that requires contorting yourself just to get there.
Lloyd about: Ahhhhh!!!!!!!! Andy, and that is why it is quite here in Columbus. No one wants to talk about last nights game.
There was an article in Saturday's paper about living in Columbus and not being a fan and how overwhelming it can be. The people interviewed all agreed that the only cure however is a long loosing streak.
Lloyd about: Ahhhhh!!!!!!!! It is a nice and quite morning here in Columbus.
Happy Birthday Wes!
Lloyd about: American Gladiators So who watched American Gladiators last night. It is not as exciting as it use to be. But I guess I am 15 years older now. So I may have watched my only episode.
But speaking of that. What about that looser who was crying at the end because he missed his chance 15 years ago to be on the show and was sooo happy to get the chance again.
Lloyd about: Skybus Hell yeah Cathryn. I would jump on that in a minute instead of driving to Rochester. My parents wouldn't flintch and having to drive to Buffalo to pick up their little sweet heart. So Wes and Leanne, you guys may have to put up with Amy and I for the weekend for they will leave us there.
Lloyd about: Skybus Hey Buffalo residents. There was a short article in the local paper yesterday that said Skybus is currently in negotiations with an airport in Niagara Falls. So no official word as of right now. But it is something to look forward to.
Lloyd about: Not being paid Uncle Dougums, I have a scenario for you to ponder over the weekend. What would your law firm do if your client decieded not to pay you. I would assume you would stop working for that client until you were paid. Not our firm. We will work months without being paid by a client. And in most cases they have no grounds to stand on because we are doing our job as stated in our contract. So what are your thoughts on that?
Lloyd about: punching children I could take 23.
Lloyd about: Ice Bowl Ahhh, you can always grow it, it just grows further south.
Lloyd about: Ice Bowl By the pictures it looks like you guys had a good time. That would have been fun!
By the way bub, nice winter wear. Are you trying to join the club of hairy bastards?
Lloyd about: I am actually going to say it is because our threshold of pain is much higher than others. They most likely figured we could tolerate the ass rape long enough to complete the project before we would hit our breaking point.
Lloyd about: The guy my team gets to deal with is a tool and die guy who thinks he knows how to build buildings. He is a real piece of work, let me tell you!
Lloyd about: Hey, at least your client hasn't asked you to remove all wood blocking from your roof structure and use foam instead for the top of your parapet.
By the way, we are completely ignoring that request and putting it in our ever growing "crazy comment/request" folder.
Lloyd about: No, Brad and I are suffering as well again with you guys.
Lloyd about: I am not destined to have all girls! Actaully, Mr. Scheetz did not seam to be as excited as we thought he would be. I mean he barely cracked a smile.
Lloyd about: Anal Leakage Berg, I did not realize that your ass was such a hot environmental topic. Anal Leakage
Lloyd about: I am not destined to have all girls! I am not sure if everyone here knows that Amy and I are expecting our second child in April. But we received and early Christmas present last week and found out that we are going to be having a boy.
Lloyd about: Christmas Eve?! Oh, you know you love it! It is always so quite though. No phone calls from clients or consultants.
Lloyd about: uh oh Bub, I know a computer nerd such as yourself that works for ESPN. And his idea of sports is a friendly game of darts. Beyond that, he knows next to nothing.
Lloyd about: holy fucking geez!! That if sweet!!!! I can't even imagine the rush from doing that. I mean skydiving gives you a huge rush, but man, flying right next to the mountain edge and buzzing people on a mountain overpass. I wish I had the money and time to do that.
Lloyd about: I heart winter I miss winter. I think if it ever snows enough here in Columbus I am going to strap on my snow blades and ski in my backyard. I think my property slopes enough.
Lloyd about: Blood Suckers I am in Ohio. I was talking to a few people yesterday that were in accidents and the lawyers calling were actually extremely pushy and insisted that they were injured when they clearly were not. So I can only assume that is the same case with the woman who was also involved in the accident, and with the fact she could barely speak english, I am sure it was not a hard sell. But it is annoying as hell, because the day after the accident I recieved 3 phone calls from different body shops.
With that said, I can only assume that their are no rules againest accident scene solicitations.
Lloyd about: Moondays Well insulation was installed yesterday. So I have some misc. framing to finish. So I need to finish that tonight or tomorrow so I can get the framing and insulation inspection so I can get the drywall contractors to start on Monday with the hopes they will be done on Friday so the mess is all cleaned up before my parents show up for Kaelynn's birthday party next weekend.
Lloyd about: Moondays Actually the holidays were pretty good. I am just being pulled in two different directions right now. I am in the home stretch for the renovation projects at home and we are beginning a big push to get a project done in the office.
Lloyd about: Sean Taylor So who saw that Sean Taylor died early this morning from the gun shot wound he received the night before.
So how do you feel Berg. Weren't you originally going to trash the man?
Lloyd about: Fn' blood suckers Uncle Dougums, what the F is up with your profession. Why are so many of you guys ambulance chasers. I was in an accident at the beginning of the month (unfortunately my fault) and there was an EMT crew on site to see if people were injured. The woman's ass that my car kissed was not visibly damaged and the non-english speaking, lets call her "Bitch" was not injured and even stated so to the EMT. But once the god damn accident report is filed, 10+ lawyers call asking to represent you. I mean, what the fuck. We both drove away from the accident. So what is the need to push for such a case. Is that just a sign that as a Lawyer "A" you just suck and can't represent real clients or "B" you are just a money hungry blood sucker that does not really give a shit. Or "C" all of the above.
Lloyd about: Thanksgiving Well my Thanksgiving holiday begins in 15 minutes. So Berg, Happy Birthday and everyone have a good thanksgiving. Wes and Leanne, we will wave to you as we drive by later today.
Lloyd about: Black Friday I will wake up long enough to grunt goodbye as Amy leaves the house with my mom to fight the absolute madness. I feel sorry for Amy's sister Allison, because now that she has a real job, she is one of those employees that has to report to work at 5am to "control" the mob.
Lloyd about: zzzz wiki just proved Aaron right the wind is blowing from the North West corner to the South East corner. So it is a north west wind.
Lloyd about: Slavic Village Derek, I think it is because everyone bases their knowledge on what they know of downtown Cleveland. My Dad (NY Resident) went to at least one Browns home game a year for many years and commented on how much cleveland has turned around based the activity he saw going on downtown in terms of clean up.
Lloyd about: Ahhhhh!!!!!!!! I have one comment to make. Stupid fucking management. When you don't understand what the capabilities of your staff or consultants are, you have to ask them! Ahhhhhhh!!!! I hope you do not see my mug shot online later today. Because I may kill the ass! Too bad Brad is not in the office today because he would probably assist in the pure pleasure of bodily harm.
Lloyd about: hey drafting monkeys The problem is your p-line is not closed. So you are just extruding a line. Force it closed and you should have a top.
Lloyd about: Andrew Lee English Ok, until Uncle Dougums decided to chime in I had to agree with everything that was said. However based on the many possibilities of allegiance he gives us, here is my slightly revised response.
Since I have not really paid much attention to sports since entering college, my long time allegiance is still to the Yankees being a native of New York. However I have never liked (more like despised) the Bills. But never really rooted for anyone except whoever was playing the bills. But if you asked me who I would root for in football today, I will have to say the browns after living in the Cleveland area for a few years. So with that being said I think your allegiance goes to who ever you first consciously make the allegiance to. Birth place or blood line makes no difference. Which completely speaks to Andy's situation, or Uncle Dougums.
On that note FUCK Ohio State. I can't wait for football season to end so I don't have to listen to this crap any more. And go ahead and laugh it up people, being married to a huge Ohio State Fan just makes it more annoying. But I will never crack!
Lloyd about: TV survey Well I keep reading that Plasma's renders black better, so you have better image quality for some of those dark movies. And it is typically Plasma's that have the wider viewing angle.
Don't get me wrong though, I want an LCD, but once you get into the 46"+ range, plasma's are significantly cheaper. I can get a 50" plasma for the same price as a 42" LCD.
Fuck it, wes you sold me on LCD because of Kent. So when people ask why I picked LCD I will just tell them "Because I went to Kent". But what brands/models does everyone have, or when shopping around did you really not notice a difference?
Lloyd about: TV survey Ok, researching LCD vs. Plasma, then all the options is giving me a headache. So to hopefully make this easier on myself. What does everyone have and what are your opinions?
Thanks!
Lloyd about: speaking of stupid TV... Yeah, we only have basic cable at our house at this point to keep me from getting distracted from finishing construction projects around the house.
Lloyd about: speaking of stupid TV... Wow, I really have not paid attention to the technology game in awhile. HDMI, blue ray, etc.? Hell, I thought it was hard enough looking for a HDTV, LCD vs. Plasma and all the other features. Now I have connectors to worry about. What the F.
Lloyd about: world series Berg, I have to agree with you. Dirty Sexy Money is a pretty good show. Not really thought provoking, however really entertaining. Plus the lawyers wife is pretty hot. Could you imagine having a party on the Brooklyn bridge.
Lloyd about: ARE Exam Oh by the way. I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. Starting Nov. 15th in the State Of Ohio, you can begin taking your exams concurrently with IDP.
Call Eric's buddy Amy Kobe and she will be able to give you the guidelines.
Lloyd about: ARE Exam Hell, I wouldn't mind a 5-10 year contract to have all that. Shit, job security unless you are a complete fuck up! But of course it would suck ass if you work for a complete prick. Then it could be the longest 5-10 years of your life.
Lloyd about: ARE exam Derek, did you ask about him getting paid to study? One of Amy's friends that is a lawyer in DC was paid by her firm to study for her bar.
Lloyd about: ARE exam I finally got my shit straighten out by NCARB and can now start taking the tests. I just got that wonderful news yesterday.
Anyways if you do not want to wait for the release of 4.0 in July to start taking the exams, here is some incite. One, the 4.0 exams will be more expensive than the 3.1 exams. The overall total cost for registration will go up $300. So it will be obviously cheaper to get as many 3.1 exams out of the way. Secondly you will want to make sure you pass Building Technology and Site Planning before July 2009. Because if you do not pass BT you will have to retake 4 different exams. And if you do not pass Site Planning, you will have to retake 2 different exams. But don't worry too much about structures. Because it goes from 2 tests to 1 in 4.0. ARE Transition Chart
Lloyd about: Rockabye Baby! All this talk about poop got me thinking of babies, then babies made me think of sleeping, then Metallica came on the radio and I remembered they were coming out with a lullaby CD.
Check it out. I know what Kaelynn is going to be rocking out to when she goes down for her naps now. No more Mozart shit! Rockabye Baby!
Lloyd about: 3d blocks There are some free 3d blocks on Turbo Squid for non sketchup models. Turbo Squid
Lloyd about: Kent Vs. OSU So is anyone actually coming to Columbus to tailgate at the OSU, Kent game? If not, I am just going to be locking myself in the basement so the hired help can start working next week.
Lloyd about: Thewsums Now I am claiming politically dumb on all ends. But anything that brings down the cost of private insurance is a good thing. Now the combined income for my household is over $60,000, but there is no way we could afford it at $500 a month for 3 people. And those are actual numbers that Amy got a few months ago, and that was on the low end.
Lloyd about: We are flying Skybus into Hartford actually on the 3rd and then heading up to Boston on the 4th and will most likely be heading over to Queensbury on the 6th.
Lloyd about: Travels Well Amy, Kaelynn and myself will be traveling between those two areas visiting new family additions (Boston) as well as my brother and his finance (Queensbury). Oct. 3rd-9th. Maybe we can do dinner one night?
Lloyd about: Travels Andy & Cathryn, how far are you guys from Boston or Queensbury, NY?
Lloyd about: awful I wish I had one of those in Taylor Hall. Although pushing them over the edge with the hopper window and watching them spin their tale on the way down was always entertaining. But image launching one having it land on one of the bathing beauties below. Now that would be hilarious.
Lloyd about: kent state I found out last night that Amy will be attending the game as well with her Dad. So I am more than happy to miss the kent state stomping and continue to numb the pain of our future loss with alcohol.
Lloyd about: kent state We may be able to find a babysitter and join in the tailgating festivities.
Lloyd about: Cavemen Hey, Dinasours was funny!
NOT THE DADDY!!
Lloyd about: politics Do I care? I care about it just as much as I care about some homeless guy that I don't know in California passing away.
Now if they started passing away in the masses, then I would scream conspiracy. But if they were all to die off, I would think, what a wonderful world we live in.
Lloyd about: question I would say it is possible in many parts of the country. But may not be in your area. And it is all going to depend on the level of finishes and all the bells and whistles that are put into it. There have been projects in the past few years that have been published with a construction cost of $98 per square foot. But they were very efficient about the use of materials.
But as being able to help you, sorry, I am trying to figure the estimating thing out myself.
Lloyd about: I had the thin strip of hair on top that I pulled back into a ponytail while the rest of the head was shaved. So I had the skater look without the skateboard.
Lloyd about: wow Sorry bub, they don't make thank you cards for that occasion. Trust me I looked! But how I went from a card to a diamond necklace is still a mystery to me.
Lloyd about: wow No, that is not what I was saying. I was in euphoria when Kaelynn was born. So obviously I did not have a clear train of thought when I made the purchase.
Lloyd about: wow Well I bought her a diamond necklace when Kaelynn was born. So obviously she expects another diamond something when the next child is born.
Lloyd about: wow Sorry guys, but that doesn't work either. It goes directly to Ron White's bit of a little truth in advertising from De Beers.
Diamonds...Render her speechless.
Or translation; Diamonds....That will shut her up. For a minute!
Plus it is one of the slippery slope type things. You buy it once, they expect it ALL the time!
Lloyd about: Great Lakes brew in NY Well I am glad it got to you early then. The first of the year must be for the Rochester and Syracuse area.
Lloyd about: Great Lakes brew in NY. Wes, I am not sure if I have ever updated you. But I found out about a month ago that Wegmans WILL begin carrying Great Lakes beer at the 1st of the year. I am happy because I won't have to be a delivery man when I go home to Rochester.
Lloyd about: IRS The kid was interviewed on the Today Show this morning and he was on his way to Australia to visit his little sister who is currently filming a movie over there. I don't remember which movie she has been in previously though. I am sure if you google the name you will find it.
Lloyd about: IRS Not to bring up the Bond's homerun again (sorry Abby). But who has seen the latest article about the IRS potentially collecting taxes on the perceived value of the ball as taxable income. Even if he does not sell the ball he could potentially owe the government $210,000. Mets fan could face big tax bill over Bonds' home run ball
Lloyd about: You can write off the investment if you donate them. We had a friend buy season tickets to Pitt last year to attend the Pitt vs. Notre Dame game last. And he ended up donating the rest of the tickets to the same organization.
Lloyd about: I have asked the same question. One ticket per person. So it would mean $86 per ticket. So the only advantage we would have by purchasing them thru Kent is we have a better chance to sit with each other and should have better seats.
Lloyd about: OSU vs. Kent tickets I knew that question would be asked. So in true general contractor form.
Everything is on schedule and shall be ready for occupancy by the date requested.
Lloyd about: Question Amy and I would be interested in attending the game. We attended the last one and got our tickets thru the alumni association which then catered a lunch.
Lloyd about: anniversary Thanks! This is year.........3.
Lloyd about: $$$ I agree, I would much rather be in the white-collar world than the blue-collar. I don't even know how my friends from Rochester can do it day after day. That week replacing the roof of my house just about killed me. And he does it on a daily basis.
Lloyd about: $$$ So bub, you can honestly say that it does not bother you one bit that some snotty 22 year old is never going to have to join the white-collar world. Especially when they pull stuff like Quinn is doing by holding out on his contract and charging people for his autograph.
Now I am going to say I am not against them all. And I will use Labron James for example. He has kept it cool with one slip up in high school when he accepted some jersey's. When you act like you have class, you get treated that way.
Lloyd about: $$$ Honestly I hope that Quinn pulls the same stunts that Winslow did when he first started. Kids now get their egos boosted so much they think they are better than someone who has been doing the job for years.
Lloyd about: stange I have recieved a few calls while at work. One was even to move out to Denver. But I have been recieving a lot of emails lately at work instead of phone calls.
Lloyd about: Please comment so I don 1. Wes, I have no idea how the Live Earth concert series got past me as well. I even check out the "treehugger" sites on a regular basis and there was no mention. But I must say, I did watch the broadcast for 3 hours. Not the same, I would have prefered to be at one of the shows.
3. As for the guy getting blown up. I guess there were 3 people involved (1 woman & 2 guys) and the guy who got blown up actually tried to back out but the collar was forced onto him. They also believe that it was always the intention of the woman to blow him up. But to really blow your mind. The other two were dating and she actually killed her boyfriend (second guy) so there we be no additional witnesses. That that is what I call a first class bitch.
9. Garage sales are sweet when you get a guy that inspects everything like he was buying a used car. We had one a few weeks ago and made some mad cash. Now the rest is going to AMVETS.
Lloyd about: Architecture Stuff Let me guess Biggie, you are working with either Dublin or Worthington. But by the comment I would say Worthington. Plus it just seams counter productive to add a wood panel into an exterior aluminum system.
Lloyd about: Paris What about the fact that Larry King gave her all of the questions ahead of time and also allowed scripted answers.
Lloyd about: Architect Well it will not nesscarily require the actual LEED certification, but it will be used as a benchmark, especially for the energy effiency aspect. Because as you know, the school board is making uneducated desicions that ultimatly affect the long term performace of the building. And by setting these standards, they will not be able to minimize the glazing to 5% of the floor area in classrooms(Columbus public requirement) to save on upfront building costs. So as the more effiecient schools come online, the school district will see more money as the operating and maintence cost are lowered. Also OSFC has hired a firm to do a study for them to compare LEED and their standards. So it is coming one way or the another.
Plus we are investigating with DAS on how we can jump the "brick wall" in terms of construction and operating budget so that a project can borrow money from the operating budget to pay for things that may be more costly upfront.
Lloyd about: Architect Berg, you are lucky that Amy will not have access to bubdotcom until tomorrow. But AIA does a lot for us that you do not know about. They are consistantly lobbying at both state and federal levels. Hell, thank AIA Ohio for your job and not having to relocate or work at McDonalds (although the benifits may be better). Because if it was not for our lobbiest our clients would be paying taxes on our services. And if that was the case, our clients would be going out of state to hire architects where they can save an additional 4%.
So if you want to blame some lazy ass for not doing anything, blame yourself. Because you are apart of the problem by not doing anything about it. I mean you aren't even on top of the issues that AIA is currently dealing with. And don't say you can't do anything about it because by being involved with AIA, I had a hand in shaping House Bill 251 regarding energy effiency and depending on how we work out the logistics with DAS, it can potentially require all state funded buildings to seek some sort of LEED certification.
Lloyd about: Architect Maybe I will continue to use the term little bitch until NCARB allows me to follow in Thews foot steps.
Lloyd about: Architect Sorry bub, I blended two similar arguements into one.
Lloyd about: Architect Actually it is not AIA that would sue your ass, it is the state government. But it still irritates me when other professions can just throw the term around. And would be downright disrespectful of our training if the state or federal government was to hire an non architect for the highest architect postion in both the state and federal government. Bub, it would be like artist that can only paint a pretty picture comes to you and tells you how to do your job. How can you even respect that person if you know they got the job not because of education or qualification, it is just because they are a very good kiss ass.
Lloyd about: Actually no, I wanted to do that on Saturday. I wanted to strangle my mother-in-law on Fathers day.
Note to all without kids: Don't even bother trying to tell grandma that what your kid is doing is ok. They will still quickly cut your legs out from under you and do what the hell they want. God forbid a little kid plays in the dirt.
Lloyd about: Hell, I wanted to knock my Dad out and strangle my mother-in-law. Luckily it was not both on the same day, otherwise not only would I have snapped, but Amy might have as well.
Lloyd about: DIY Furniture Here is a sweet DIY furniture project for some of you that are handy. Tensegrity Table
Lloyd about: Ladder golf is a pretty cool game (it's all in the wrist). I played it last summer at my brothers graduation party. Although the cross members were larger on the one I played vs. the ones that you can buy. But you could easily turn it into a drinking game.
Lloyd about: Bub, I will join you at the cornhole games. I have sweated enough the past two weeks.
Lloyd about: GREEN So how big will the house be Berg? If you are going the extremist view of green, you can't go big and green with the house.
Lloyd about: ncarb Yes, Version 4.0 will be out July 2008 and the current version will overlap for 1 year. Which means that if you have started taking the exam you HAVE to be done by July 2009. Because as Amy and I found out from NCARB is that if you are not completed with the current version you will be required to take some of the sections over again because of the way the new test is structured and the way they are redistributing some of the questions.
So I need to get my ass moving because I do not want to wait another year just to start taking the test. So good luck to everyone on that path and bend over and take another one for the team from NCARB.
Lloyd about: lost is eating at my brain Holy shit Wes!! Do you read this shit every week. Now I enjoy the show for the way it plays with your mind with the consequence of having to listen to Amy every week complain that they keep throwing new twists in and it annoys her. But the guy that wrote the article must like listening to himself talk. Plus what kind of life does he have to really read that far into any show. He mentions he has already seen next weeks episode, so does this guy just watch this show 20 times until he memorizes every event and little artifact/book title that is shown.
Lloyd about: no wiki-cheating PJ quiz I will even put on my old PJ concert T. Now I just need my old skater cut and we are all good. Should only take a couple of months to grow out.
Lloyd about: no wiki-cheating PJ quiz I will have to bust out my Temple Of The Dog album this week for a nice flash back to the past.
Lloyd about: no wiki-cheating PJ quiz I want to say the original name of the band was Temple Of The Dog, which was a band formed when Eddie Veder joined with the surviving members of Mother Love Bone to mourn the death of the MLB's lead singer.
Lloyd about: parenthood Oh god please help me!!!!!! I almost cried when I read that. It is bad enough my 15 month old daugther is already kissing boys. Now I have to worry about her dry humping their legs?! Oh just shoot me now. I thought I did not have to worry about that until say.........they could talk!
Lloyd about: I have to agree with you bub. I don't understand what was so great about seinfeld. It just bored me.
Lloyd about: Great Lakes For those of you that live in Buffalo and like the Great Lakes beers, they will be appearing in a Wegmans near you soon.
Thanks to my Dad, he was able to convince the beer buyer for Wegmans to talk to Great Lakes and they just struck a deal that will allow Wegmans to sell their beer in their Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse stores.
Lloyd about: news Berg, the fat naked guy was a radio stunt by Rovers Morning Rlory. They have the original broadcast posted on the website as well the Jimmy Kimmel commentary. Rovers Morning Glory
Lloyd about: weather Driving into work was actually pretty easy this morning. The interstate was somewhat clear, but their were absolutely no cars on the road. But it was extremely entertaining this morning as I was hacking away at the 1" layer of ice on my car, there was a guy that was trying to drive down our unplowed residential streets in his Z4. Hell, he only made it 2' out of the driveway before he got stuck and started sliding down the hill sideways as he was spinning his tires. What the dumb ass does not realize is that High Performance tires does not mean high performance driving in shitty, snowy weather. But Amy will have to tell you about how entertaining it is to watch our neighbors trying to drive UP their driveway into their garage. I can't wait for the day that one of them catchs the dry pavement and just guns it thru the back wall of their garage.
Lloyd about: weather Can I tell you how ridiculous C-bus is when it snows. The majority of school districts used up most of their snow days last week when it was "cold". So now that actual snow arrives, we get bus accidents instead of cold feet. But much to my surprise with the 3 or 4 inches that was on the ground in the morning the interstate was moving slow, but moving. Although it was primarily due to what biggie said that most businesses shut down this morning, or the lame ass people just stayed home. Ahhh.... it irritates me something fierce with the c-bus so called "winter". Move to North Western New York for a winter and experience what it is like c-bus ass holes. This is normal "winter" driving conditions where I came from. If I ever loose my winter diving skills and complain about “winter” instead of the stupid asses on the road, please slap me!
Lloyd about: ARE First off I am a long time listener, first time caller.
But Abby let me know how the accelerated schedule goes. I just finished my IDP a couple of weeks ago and I know for damn sure that NCARB will not have all the paper work done in time to allow me to take the MEP section before it changes so I figure to hell with studying until summer time. Plus I have house project that need to get done.
